About Karel Kammeijer
Karel is a great lover of artists, illustrators and cartoonists. In his work you come across all kinds of influences that he has been fascinated by from an early age.
In his line drawings you can see how his father's architectural background inspired him. His grandfather shared his admiration for MC Escher with him, who wrote his compositions in black and white, the echo of which resonates clearly in Karel's paintings and illustrated collage works.
There are also all kinds of looser style influences to be found. In Karel's portrait style and illustrations you will find the hand of cartoonist Peter van
Straaten back, of which he has devoured countless booklets and of which there was always a tear-off calendar hanging in the toilet.
Karel's ability to translate stories into images
traced back to his years of addiction to Tintin comic books, of which style elements, certain humor and illustration techniques subtly return.
The explosive energy in Karel's collage works comes from cartoons such as the Powerpuff girls, Dragonball Z and his favorite character Mojo Jojo.
Karel studied illustration at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.
